"This is Prosthetic Vogon Jeltz of the Galactic Hyperspace Planning Council," the voice continued. "As you will no doubt be aware, the plans for development of the outlying regions of the Galaxy require the building of a hyperspatial Express route through your system, and regrettably your planet is one of those scheduled for demolition. The process will take less than two of your Earth minutes. Thank you"

Just finished the first book in this compendium. I have to say, I find myself intrigued by the constant coincidences guiding the story. Though the ending didn't quite feel "finished" I think I have to view this series as a collection of short stories in the same universe. The books are just slightly bigger appendixes than the short stories. I'm probably going to come back to this compendium after I've had a break.

"Excuse me, what's your name again, by the way?"
"My name?" said the old man, and the same distant sadness came over his face again. He paused.
"My name," he said, "is Slartibartfast"
Arthur practically choked.
"I beg your pardon?" he spluttered.
"Slartibartfast," repeated the old man quietly.
"Slartibartfast?"
The old man looked at him gravely.
"I said it wasn't important."
The aircar sailed through the night.

"Ford!" he said, "there is an infinite number of monkeys outside who want to talk to us about this script of Hamlet they've worked out."

Arthur remained very worried.
"But can we trust him?" he said
"Myself I'd trust him to the end of the Earth," said Ford
"Oh yes," said Arthur, "and how far's that?"
"About twelve minutes away," said Ford, "come on, I need a drink."

"Shaving mirror- pointing at the ceiling. He adjusted it. Properly adjusted, it reflected Arthur Dent's bristles. He shaved them off, washed, dried and stomped off to the kitchen to find something pleasant to put in his mouth."
