The novel depicted a young boy that was forced to move into New York after his mother became pregnant in the Dominican Republic. The boy, Dan-El was an African American boy who faced many challenges growing up as an illegal immigrant with very little money. His father had left him and all he had was his little brother and mother. However, Dan-El works hard in school and becomes an amazing student during high-school.

The conflict of this novel is character vs. himself. In the novel, Mitch visits his old professor every Tuesday and receives new lessons each time. With the help of his professor, Morrie, Mitch learns valuable life lessons and completely changes his view on life. The conflict is character vs. himself since Mitch develops overtime through his valuable lessons with Morrie.

This novel is a non-fiction story about the life of Mitch Albom and his professor, Morrie. The subgenre is a memoir because the novel is about a significant part of Mitch's life when he visited his old professor every Tuesday.
