I’m not sure how long ago I did an update but just finished Ch. 14, John’s prison transport and “initiation”. Like most prisons, he was taken advantage of my his cellmate and traded around for contraband. After being admitted to the prison hospital, his father came to see and pretty much told him that Mary Alice felt worse pain except John deserves it.

We learn a lot more about John. He’s been working at a car wash since he got out. On this day, his coworker Ray got into it with a hooker. He stepped in to defend her and ended in walking her back to work and surprisingly not losing his job. At the shop, he conversed with the bartender. She ended up working him and almost went to a room. But instead they talked and he reflected on his only kiss with Mary Alice.

About 30 years later, we met John Shelley who was convicted for the murder of Mary Alice. We learn about his past and what led him to this moment, but not if he committed the crime.

We discover not only has the serial killer diverted from his MO, targeting an older black woman, but another teenage white girl. Someone Michael knew personally who had just turned 15.

Michael learns a bit about Trent’s past; being “vultured” on his case as a detective a few years ago. He also discovers that he’s very closed off and is threatened by his presence, especially since he inserted himself into the case.

Finally, we meet Will Trent. Here from the GBI to assist Michael Orewood (?) and Tim with the cases of the beaten teenage girl with the bitten tongue. Will explains to Michael the pattern of 3 other girls who suffered the same MO.
