Marlow's journey up the river and his experience with Kurtz and the ivory trade certainly gave me a perfect topic to research. The history behind using rivers to trade is rich in Africa. Again literary history can be pointed out through atitudes of the europeans. The backdrop of such a dangerous desolate land can add to the desparation and. Helplessness of the europeans especially kurtz

I find this book difficult to read at times yet types of historical criticism is evident. Literary history can be found throughout the first part of this novella especially in the attitudes of the characters. Such as the aunt refering to natives as savages. In the time this book was written the British empire was at its height with a very imperialistic mindset that could be felt throughout its society.
