- It's a pastime he shares with his birds, and a subtle indication that it's either a perfect animal/human pairing or that they've rubbed off on him.
(2) Dire Wolf's real name is Donnica, which suggests she might be Italian.
- I've assigned her the appropriate accent.

(2) Helmets here are sort of treated like wands in "Harry Potter."
- Eventually, you can learn to do "magic" without them. In this case, connect with and control animals.
- As well, while anyone can use them, they're linked/bonded with particular individuals.

- It underscores Rook and Dire Wolf's humanity and vulnerability in this mechanized world of monstrous wildlife and faceless men.
- Seeing as people are desperate to flee Earth, it's almost synonymous with being doomed.

(2) This is my favorite of all the Ghost Machine series, which was a surprise.
