When Ms Komachi asked me this question, my first thought was: I'm still searching. Searching for somewhere I can be accepted as I am. Just one place is all I need. Somewhere to be at peace.
He gets to know a woman who is training to be a librarian. He read about evolution. About Darwin and Wallace. He knew that during the lifetime of Darwin, evolution was not a popular idea.

He worked for the same company his whole life, and now he is retired. He didn't know what to do with himself. So his wife suggested he join a community Go club. Then he found a library and read poetry.
He needs to find meaning other than being a worker. It is not as easy as he has no hobbies and no special interests. He could take the time to learn new things, to enjoy life as it is.

Now, evolution is common knowledge. Only those who denied reality would believe otherwise. People gain knowledge by knowing how we become human among other apes. This knowledge freed him to find a temp job. To help out and give meaning to the job while continuing to draw. His young self wants to be different, and his drawing is different.
