Personally, I see Chapter 2 as a response or reflection on the first chapter of the book. Previously, there had been hints regarding the significance of Kurtz as well as the imbalance between reality and insanity throughout Marlow's journey. Kurtz had been built up to be this larger-than-life figure, and in this second part, Marlow looks to him as a symbol of reality in his journey through disasters and conspiracies.

I was truly intrigued by Kurtz and his portrayal as a "universal genius," especially with the words that he had wanted to preserve through Marlow. In the moments of the near-death experiences, Marlow and Kurtz faced what was inside their hearts and discovered what they needed to say. The mystery within them revealed Kurtz's ambition and his desire to speak and Marlow's self-realization that he had "nothing to say."

The very beginning of the book had peaked my curiosity because of its unusual setting and narrative. The main narrative is told by a nameless narrator that includes the thoughts of the other three friends when also narrating Marlow's story of his time in Africa. Marlow recounts his story in first person, which the author frames in quotes so it was novel to read the main story as a dialogue mixed with descriptions.
