finally started up again. the Kindle 5 turns out to be a decent PDF reader, at least in this case.
though the zoom was either too far out, or too far in. the impromptu solution has been to turn things to landscape orientation, where the text fills the page pretty well. not ideal but better than a lot of attempts at reading rotten stinkin' PDFs.
