"was that she was sleeping on my birthday. I tiptoed to her bed and looked at her. She was lying on top of her covers, wearing the fancy black dress she sometimes wore to church. At least she remembered to dress up. ' Mom,' I said. She did not answer. I shook her gently. 'Mom.' Why wasn't she moving? I looked around and saw two empty pill bottles on the floor."

I am happy for Shakespeare. I think he deserved to win the prize for best memoir. I think that the messege the author is trying to give is to be responsible. I think that because in the book Shakespeare does irresponsible things and he gets into situations that he doesn't want to be in.

Shakespeare is comparing himself to his brother too much, and that drives him to do things he should not do. In his writing piece he describes how his dad and his dad's friend are both drunk. Robert,(Shakespeare's father's friend) suggests that they get some more dirks and jump into a fountain. On page 220 Shakespeare says, " 'I need a drink' " he says this after comparing himself to his brother who NEXT STATUS

Shakespeare is being too noisy. He keeps on asking Charlotte things about her life at home. I feel like he is more interested in knowing all the issues she has then trying to be her friend. Shakespeare need to take her life more seriously and not act likes it's a movie, waiting to find out what happens next.

" or pantry for us to eat. When I came home from school that day, I did not even realize at first that anything was wrong. I deposited my brother in the front of the television and fixed him a snack. Because it was my birthday and because my Mommy had promised me a party when I got home I knocked on the door and crept into the room. She looked like she was sleeping, and i remember thinking how sad it" NEXT STATUS

" By that time I had grown accustomed to her bouts of depression and understood that sometimes Mommy was just too sad to get out of bed. On these days, my father would tell us to be extra quiet, and then he would go out and not come home until very late. My brother and I would sit in front of the television with the volume turned low, and when we got hungry I would look for food in the refrigerator" NEXT SATUS

I feel bad for Charlotte. When I read her memoir I felt like she had no place to go in this world. I thought this because it seems like she has no parents, even though her dad is still alive. She acts like a mother for her brother, and she focuses more on him then she does on her self. In the text, when it gives us part of her memoir, it says, " My mother committed suicide on my twelfth birthday." NEXT STATUS

"of things that are hard to write about.' 'I know what you mean,' I say. 'My life's been one disaster after another.' She gives me a sad smile. ' Do you want to get together sometime and give each other feedback on our memoirs?' I ask. This seems to catch her off guard, and she takes a moment to answer. ' I don't know. Maybe when we know each other a little better., "

" 'Is everything okay?' I ask her about a week after we've returned. It is the end of the day, and she is slumped against the locker with her head resting on the door. She quickly stands. 'I'm just tired.' What is she hiding I wonder. Why does she keep herself so closed off? I ask her how her memoir is coming. 'Slowly.' She looks at the floor and pushes her hair out of her face. ' It's opening up a lot " NEXT STATUS
