I've seen the movie so many times that I'd totally forgotten how different Rhett and Scarlett are in the book. And how stressful and vivid the war is. It is uncomfortable to be on the South's side, though.

This book is so great at capturing...*everything.* The cast-adrift sense of a vanished civilization is so vivid. And Scarlett's transformation is so well-done, it beautifully justifies all her choices for the rest of the novel. She's selfish, but you understand how selfless she is in her selfishness.
