I thought about what Donny said long after he’d left. It was exactly that. I’d jump on a grenade for Simon—hell, any of them at this point—yet I hated this world. It was tricky, and it was my life.

“He needs to live, Snow. He has to because I’m not done loving him.”

He wrapped his arms around me, and I greedily hugged him back. “It wasn’t that long ago that Rush said the same thing to me about you. He’s strong, Eight. He’ll fight because he has something to fight for.”

I wanted to believe Snow’s words more than anything in the world. And for a while I did, until the doctor came into the waiting room.

“Did I hear dogs bar…oh.” Fred stared wide-eyed at Snow’s dogs, who were now lying on the floor after finishing their meals.
"Germadoodles.”
"Whatahoodles?” Fred sniggered.
"Yeah, long story. Something about a German shepherd seducing a poodle and a lady with red hair. I’m fuzzy on the details.”
“I need coffee.”

"Do you think anyone knows what the future will hold when they agree to bind themselves to another? They only hope it will be forever and that the love they feel in that moment will never fade. I know, right now, I love you more than anyone in this entire world. It’ll take more than Liam Brennan to tear us apart.”

It happened as fast as all the books & movies tell you it does. One minute I was talking to one of my bodyguards, then he was on the pavement, dead with a bullet through the head. I was thrown to the ground, someone on top of me & the sounds of shouts & gunshots filled the night. I closed my eyes & wished it would all disappear, knowing this was my reality, this was what I’d chosen. All because I fell in love.
