Aglaea
added a status update
In the interest of cleaning up my feed on your behalf, since the home page settings are unbelievably restricted in this horrendous 'improvement', I've adjusted what I push out to you. I had all boxes ticked in the account settings > update feed, but they have been culled to four now, mostly book-related content. I've looked at the feed settings themselves on Home and there are three rather useless options only.

I have few checked before, now I've just one. It'd be nice if people I follow decreased what they share because I like seeing the status and not just the reviews :)

Well. This is absurd. Up on top it says "Marta commented on an update" which is mine, this one. But the only options available to me when accessing this from the home page is Like or Comment. Whaaa? Seriously? I'd have to click to my own profile first to edit it somehow!
Maybe I should flag my earlier comment? See what happens? *eyeroll* I can't edit these comments either, because I'm still on the home page. Some people are far from geniuses...
Oh wow. So when I open this very update on its own page, I can edit comments but not the original update. I give up. Negative feedback won't change anything, they simply just don't care. I'm not used to such people, but find it very disconcerting.
I find it silly that the same things go on my profile as my friends' updates.Aglaea what is your suggestion, what should be ticked in the settings/update feed?
You wrote: "I've looked at feed settings themselves on Home and there are three rather useless options only." What do you mean by that, I can't find it.
Zaz what do you mean by seeing the status: "I like seeing the status and not just the reviews"
Anna, great questions, because it takes a bit of digging around for settings in different places. Naturally they can't all be in the same place...Feed Update Settings
1. I'm on a desktop version right now, so the profile picture is up on top in the right-hand corner. If you hover above it, you'll see Account Settings. Click on it.
2. There you'll find eight different menus, the first of which is called Profile. Choose Feed instead to open Feed Update Settings.
3. I had four boxes ticked yesterday, but removed one. Now they are three:
- Add a book to your shelves
- Comment on someone's review
- Add a new status to a book I'm reading
I'm not sure about the book to shelves one now, because like Marta I redo from time to time and also usually add more at once when going to look for new books (GR monthly emails etc.).
Home page settings
1. Underneath the announcement box there's Customize with a wheel picture. Click on it.
2. For Content, there are three options.
- I find that "Book updates only" will show reviews and other bookish updates, possibly not book-status updates though (? haven't seen them when this was chosen).
- "Reviews only" is just that.
- "Everything" will show also other stuff such as poll votings, comments, etc. If I understand things, at least this should be governed by the Feed Update Settings chosen earlier, but it's hard to say, because what shows in my feed is super strange, illogical that is.
Currently I'm not interested in seeing many comments in groups made by others, what polls or lists they voted on etc. but since I'm not allowed to choose exactly what content I see, I keep Everything activated. Because the two more restricted options cut out things I am interested in seeing, only then there's the silly polls etc. Can't win... This was partly what Zaz was talking about, too.
You're welcome. Another option not yet mentioned, if a particular member is flooding the feed, is to distinguish heavily between friends and top friends. In the Feedback group there's been concern about picture sizes, as for instance a person, who enjoys "trashy" novels was previously able to have the screen open around her kids, now feels like some bondage picture isn't okay anymore in its blown-up state. Yeah no, I wouldn't be comfortable having such a display open around my offspring either, but Goodreads just doesn't care.
