The first three chapters really describe the character of Okonkwo. He demonstrates great stength as a clan leader. He also defeated the strongest warrior in the village and supports three wives and their children. He gets his motivation from his father. His father was basically a failure which motivates Okonkwo to be the most successful man in the village.

At first, I didn't really understand why Okonkwo would kill himself. I understood things were rough, but I didn't think it was worth killing himself over. But then I realized Okonkwo probably killed himself due his lack of success. He always realized he would never achieve his goals after everything that happened. Success and title meant everything to him, and after he realized he would never achieve either of those.

In part two, the entire story shifts. I feel the biggest change is Nwoye's religious conversion. He finds comfort with Christianity that he didn't find with his native religion. But his father hates Christianity and he views his son as even weaker than he was before.
