I've started skimming whenever I think I can get away with it. I'm not a good skimmer, tho, since I'm something of a completionist. *sighs*

I've been to Snagov. Beautiful monastery/church. I don't recall there being ruins of a prison there, tho. Just saying.

Just when it gets interesting, it breaks to present day with pointless and tedious discussions about cafes and architecture...

Stuart I must confess if I skim to much I feel guilty and give a book up. Though I remember an interesting discussion in my local book club, which lead to at least one member admitting they would miss whole chapters out just to finish a book, if it got like that for me I must admit I would give up and said so at the time.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon Thing is, I don't think I can just give it up. I've invested enough time into it already, I have to find out what happens. Even when I put it down and picked up another book for a few days, my mind kept drifting to 'The Historian' in a mix of guilt and wonder. It's a sickness, I know, but I don't think I've ever not finished a book.

I have, however, learned to give up on series, so I'm making progress. :>

Stuart I must admit I have given up more books than I have listed. I think part of it is being married to someone who reads a cross section of books and has no guilt about giving a book up. It has rubbed off on me, but just lately I have read a number of books without giving up. I think it might be a sequence of at least a dozen without quitting. The irony is I have agreed to read the last book my wife quit
The Damned Utd by David Peace. Which she has just admitted she will probably tackle again at a later date.
