In Book 1, Anna, through recounting her father Alexios’ pre-reign military exploits, extols him to no end—he’s the greatest guy ever, the best and coolest and divinely protected guy who’s ever lived, etc. The backstory for Norman “tyrant” Robert of Southern Italy, and his role in the Investiture Crisis paints an honestly fascinating picture of the cosmopolitanism of the high middle ages. Cool so far!!
