Wonderfully funny, witty historical. The main characters are great. Bathsheba Wingate's 12 yr old daughter is incorrigible and a born con artist, loved her. Bathsheba's is sweet and a good woman her only fault was falling in love at 16 with married Jack Wingate, the younger son of the EARL OF FOSBURY.

She he meets heir to the Earl of Hargate, Benedict Carsington, Viscount Rathbourne, who has the reputation of being Lord Perfect at a museum when her daughter gets into a scape with his nephew. Olivia then lures the nephew (who is always getting in trouble too) to go in search of treasure and they run away. Now Rathbourne and Bathsheba are in a chase across the country to find the children without a scandal.

Jack was cut off immediately when his family couldn't stop the marriage. She was happy with Jack till he was killed in a riding accident. Since then she has been poor, treated like an outcast and leper but trying to raise her charming and cunning daughter Olivia to be a lady. So far she is not succeeding as the girl spends more time with pawn brokers and street people than on her lessons.
