This book is just sad and hopeless, which seems to explain the mindset of a lot of AA at the time. Being in these places in an imaginative state, I see why many people felt that they had no way out.

What is up with these men just leaving their wives???

I forget the name of the woman who basically acts as an apartment/whore manager, but her character is interesting, no matter how much I disagree with her life.

Okay so she invited her drunken dad to live in her home where she had foster children and because of his drunkenness and wild parties when she and her husband, Jim, were out in Harlem. The kids were then removed from the home because the incident was reported and now they were down $30/week. Both of the men in her life - father and husband - are truly bums but more so her husband than her father.

The super is a dirty weirdo and this new guy she met at the club isn’t any better as far as I can tell.

So far, so good yet full of hope and worry at the prospect of moving with her son, Buddy, to what she hopes is a better opportunity of living - a three bedroom apartment away from her dad’s bad influence of a girlfriend Lil - but the opportunity is a three bedroom, dusty dark apartment when the main character is weary - at best - of the Super of the building.
