An audacious University of Virginia applicant actually sent a shoe with the message, 'Now that I have one foot in the door, I hope you'll let me have the other one.' (...) Though gimmicks like these can be amusing, they seldom work. The jaded eye of the admissions officer has seen most of them a thousand times (well, maybe not the shoes).
