Also the use of the term 'instinctive' to describe women's diplomatic abilities is problematic. So is a mother 'pestering' a potential benefactor on behalf of her son.

This book falls into the same trap as many books that want to discuss women in history fall into. That is, presumably because they want to set the context (that's the charitable reading), the book ends up being a general history of war etc with the women sometimes tacked on, or - best case - given more prominence than general histories do but they're still not the overwhelming focus. It's frustrating.

Some careless typos in this book are really annoying me.
