When Julia enters the story, the entire tone of the book shifts. Instead of Winston's typical depressing reality, there's now a feeling of hope. Unfortunately it's still overshadowed by a sense of anxiety that never really leaves and is definitely foreshadowing the culmination of Winston's fears coming true.
