Of the many life lessons woven into the story fabric, the predominant one is genetics don't necessarily mean that we must emulate the behavior of our parents. While blood is thicker then water, how we treat ourselves and others is a personal choice.

When a book is adapted to screen and the casting director picks Paul Newman, you can hear his voice when reading the dialog. Too many great quotes to mention and memorable as they get

Such wonderful storytelling with characters that cause you to smile, wonder and think. An appropriate subtitle might be, Apples and where they fall.

The beauty of reading a favorite book for the second time is uncovering hidden gems you'd passed over. With this go round I'm focused on the metaphor Russo uses along with moral of the story which in this case is profound. Ascerbic humor aside, Sully teaches us that people can and will change if we let them.

One of the many elements Russo weaves into the narrative are lessons we learn in life. Using dialog as the driver, he manages to cause us to think about our own in a new way. This is the craft of writing at its best and this author knows it well

For those that have yet to read this or seen the Oscar winning film, I'd recommend seeing Paul Newman prior to reading so that you realize how spot on his take of Sully was. As I read the dialog I can hear and see him along with Bruce Willis as Carl Roebuck. While there are some elements left out of the script, it follows the book closely!

Sully is one of the all time great characters who in spite of his childhood issues manages to love others with a sense of hidden joy with a dab of sarcasm. Anyone that has yet to see Paul Newman replicate the character is missing out big time!

Russo does a terrific job with small town character dynamics that incorporates age, relationships and the battle of wit vs logic. This adds to the immersive quality of the storytelling and the ascerbic humor is the icing

Russo has the talent to create likable characters that break the mold, make you laugh, wonder and care about. And in some cases they will be so inane you'll shake your head and sigh.. Great writers do that
