🤣“the problem is that much theology, having lived for so long on the convenience food of an easy-going tolerance of everything, an ‘inclusivit’y with as few boundaries as McWorld, has become depressingly flabby, unable to climb even the lower slopes of social and cultural judgment let alone the steep upper reaches of that judgment of which the early Christians spoke and wrote”

This author’s previous books, which I have thoroughly enjoyed, have been about British women of all ages and how they struggled and carried on leading up to ans throughout WWII. This book is now taking a look at what happened to women once the men all came back from the war and took their jobs back through the lens of a strong young woman becoming queen.

Fascinating discussion on paradise, purgatory and hell. ..” once we rule out purgatory, I see no reason why we should not pray for and with the dead and every reason why we should – not that they will get out of purgatory but that they will be refreshed and filled with God’s joy and peace. Love passes into prayer; we still love them; why not hold them, in that love, before God?”

Neurologists have discovered that the serotonin receptors in the brain cannot work when cholesterol levels are too low. 🤯
When we are under stress, cholesterol levels rise. This is a natural and protective reaction because hormones the body uses to deal with stress are made from cholesterol.

Another great significance to theology of resurrection, ascension, 2nd coming & hope: it was born from confrontation w/political authorities & conviction Jesus is already Lord of all. Rapture theology avoids the confrontation saying Christians get removed from the wicked world making it lean gnostic and politically laissez-faire dreaming of Armageddon in ways Paul didn’t intend. (Out of room condensed a lot here)

I think Mrs. Tartt is my favorite character. Kathryn Stockett does such a great job of fleshing out all the characters, not just the main ones.

My first batch made following the directions in this book yielded a new baby scoby that weighed a full 1/4 lb! Usually my new scoby babies are tissue paper thin, so this one is quite the bouncing baby scoby!

Chapter 10 - forgot to update when I started.
This was printed in 1964 and McGee has such a view on culture and predicting how things will be in the future and he is surprisingly accurate

Note to self: when the author says in her bio that she used to be an author but now she writes “upmarket fiction” don’t get the book.

Garrghh
If you are going to have the focus of your boom’s plot be the running of some kind of agricultural business then you should do enough research to find out what will grow in the area you have set your story and what seasons these things grow. Tulips do not grow in southwest Alabama and they certainly don’t grow at the same time as roses.

This book is fascinating.
In this chapter he’s talking about where evil came from. He says it resulted when humans worshipped and honored the elements of the natural world instead of the God who made them. Turning away from worshipping the living God turns toward death which sets off a chain reaction of consequences.

The first 20 pages were morbidly melodramatic and also gruesome. Now she supposedly burns her orange prison shirt, but two pages later she uses it to trap a bluegill in the river so she can cook it on the fire she has made with rubbing stick together. Just not sure how this is going to continue if the author can’t decide what she wants to be true.

This is waaayyyy more complicated than the GF sourdough I made during lockdown from plain sorghum flour. Very daunting to me to have a starter that needs 3 feedings a day and won’t store in the refrigerator longer than a week.

🤯 believing in an actual resurrection (not Platonic death is “going home at last”) is consistent with a strong view of God’s Justice and God as good creator. English evangelicals gave up the urgency of improving society about the same time they traded resurrection for disembodied heaven. Did this same shift happen in the US?

Some of you will appreciate his discussion of hymns - “a glance through the average hymn book reveals that a good many references to the future life beyond death are closer to Tennyson, or even to Shelley, than they are to orthodox Christianity.”
(He goes on to list specific hymns that also include Buddhist eschatology, Gnosticism, and Platonism.
