At first I thought I maybe aligned more with the Romantics and Hegel, but after reading about Kierkegaard I think I am currently stuck between his two stages of life he coined as “The Aesthetic Stage” and “The Ethical Stage.”

This book is becoming so incredibly meta but I am enjoying it sooo much. God I wish more people had read this book! I’m not even done with it but I highly suggest it to anyone wanting to not only understand philosophy more, but also how to really tackle meta fiction!

Pg. 216, “How is this my life? I asked myself as I settled into my seat with a bottle of Gatorade, perhaps the greatest indignity of all. ‘What flavor is that?’ the man beside me asked. I looked at the bottle. ‘Blue.’
For that’s all Gatorade ever tastes like—its color. Over the period that I had my stomach virus, I tried them all: blue, red, green, yellow… and a new opaque one that tasted opaque.”

Pg. 154, “I insist that Carol eat in my presence for the same reason I wait for the coffee shop employee to turn back in my direction before putting a tip in his basket. I want to be acknowledged as a generous provider. This is about me, not them.”

Pg. 52, It was stuck for some reason, and he pounded on it, saying to anyone who would listen, “this is like Obamacare: broken.” Several of the passengers around me, laughed, and I noted their faces, vowing that in the event of a crisis, I would not help lead them to an emergency exit. You people are on your own, I thought, knowing that if anything bad did happen, it would likely be one of them would save me.”

Pg. 20, “We’d all be disappointed by her absence, though for different reasons. Even if you weren’t getting along with Tiffany at the time, you couldn’t deny the show she put on—the dramatic entrances, the nonstop, professional-grade insults, the chaos she’d inevitably leav in her wake. One day, she’d throw a dish at you in the next she’d create a mosaic out of the shards.”
