“Gone, gone: the leopard - print bracelet of black and yellow diamonds...” (Hanff Korelitz 233) - Graces husband abandoned her and took all of her things. She knows he had been missing for 4 days. The fact that it took her four days to find out that he took all of his clothes from the closet they share and took all of graces jewelry proves how distracted and frazzled she’s been in the past days.

Grace is a giant hypocrite in a technical sense. She wrote a book about chastising women for spending their lives with deceitful men and then she realized her husband isn’t a doctor, he’s violent, and has many sexual assault charges toward former patients. This irony is a little bit on the nose for me but it is cool to see Grace’s life play out as if she were the character in her book.

“Stu was a smart, compassionate man...” (Hanff Korelitz 182) - Grace is in a spiral due to the fact that her husband is completely MIA. She sees an old friend, Stu in the street during her crazed walk at night. She calms down and I think this is because the author included Stu as a down to earth object that can ground the reader during a tense and almost unbelievable time.

Grace’s husband went on a business trip two days ago, and was scheduled to be back yesterday. Grace wasn’t freaking out because she thought his flight was delayed. But then she found his suitcase and phone at home; he never had a business trip. I think that Grace will be betrayed by him in some way that guilts her due to the fact that her newly published book chastises women for trusting men too much.

The main character in this book is so unlikable. She’s uptight, judgy and refuses to bond with anyone who goes against her views. Some may say this makes a book unemployable, but I think it was a bold choice by the author and it makes the book more unique and thrilling.

“‘You don’t understand, she was murdered.’” (Hanff korelitz 104) —— the book finally started to heat up. I think it is kind of an easy and cheap way to get the plot going, in just one unoriginal quote, but nonetheless...the wait was worth this major event.

This book is too slow. I understand a build up to the climax, but I’m almost at page 100 and I don’t get a scent of ANY possible conflict. It’s all been laying the ground so far. The descriptiveness of Grace’s life before this ‘terrible event’ is great, but the author should’ve moved on quicker.

In the past chapter, there was a lot of remembering (by grace) many times she felt uncomfortable seeing other naked people. Her memories were triggered when a PTA mom began breastfeeding at a movie. This is such a random and specific subject to put in a book, so I am almost completely sure it will come
up again at some point.

I’m having a hard time gaging the level of Grace’s position as a therapist. She has a book coming out and she is being interviewed for Vogue, but she says her office is small and dumpy with a bathroom she can barely fit into. I think the author is trying to make her a part of two worlds, and it just doesn’t work.

“She walked in with a briefcase and a swagger and shook Grace’s hand...” (Hanff - Korelitz 3)

This book is written in third person. A view of some type of onlooker. I doubt there is actually watching and describing everything happening but I think it is trying to hint at the hostility and mystery that is to come.

“I can’t stand the muzak.” (Thayer 216). This has nothing to do with the plot of this story, but the word Muzak is said so much in this story and I have no idea what it means. It is always placed where the word ‘music’ could be. Based on context I think it is some genre of music.
