I think I understand what is bothering me about Robin Hobb's books so far. Reproduction, child making, inheritance via spawn is a major theme that runs across all the trilogies in this series. Oftentimes the most important thing any character will ever do in their life is have a child. The futility of many characters' personal actions in their story is emphasised when you look at it from this perspective.
