oh ugh. This was supposed to be a treat. So far it's as unidimensional as a single pane cartoon (we're not talking Calvin and Hobbes here) trying to offset itself with some philosophical drop ins. The bit with 2 graduate students being completely set to tatters by someone's morning erection has stopped me in my tracks. What happened RF? Does it get better?

Garrh I hate this book so much, why do I keep reading it?
It's so dated - the ridiculous sex, the misogyny, the carnage, the reveling in torture, the reference to western Civ only. And apparently it doesn't even end!

I read 54% before giving up. This is my third Chadwick book and I guess I just don’t like her writing. The details she’s interested in are not what interest me: lots of longing, imagined slights, heavy handed pauses. I need to remember this is not the first Chadwick that I have up on, becoming less and less involved with the dramatis personae as the tale unwinds in finger wagging, whining and zzzzz.

DNF. there are wonders in this book, but it is too slow, oh so slow, 100 pages before Ma is out of bed, and so many pages hanging around with her daughter. and yes it's inventive and full of color and old/new ideas, but I've read half of it and I dont care anymore. rather than be depressed about getting through it all, I'm going to let it go!

Just can't wait to say that if there is a Temple of Batuman, that I need to pack up and go worship there. So smart! So sharp! So insightful!

this is one weird book.

this is a GREAT work, but very tough going. It's just hard to open it. Each time I do, I am cast back into a sad and dreary time for Jews (probably most people) in the Ukraine/Polish/Moldavia region in the late 1700s, to which the only out seems to be believing that the Messiah is nigh. I will be glad to finish it. Though it may be another 3 months...

DNF. I read 35%, or listened to 35% I guess. dont know if the problem for me was the book or the narrator, but I found it put me in a cranky mood. OK, I found the narrator annoying: her southern accents weren't good, her male voices were all the same and I've never heard a single man talk like that. There are many readers who loved this book, but it's not for me. Sigh of relief w/ DNF decision.

Just don't know if I can bear the brutal existence in this book, however true, and however a new insight on humanity. I'll give it a few more chapters.
