else fine is starting The Book of Phoenix (Who Fears Death, #0)
Just to note: I got halfway through this and loved it so much I gave it away to one of my dearest friends before I could finish it. It's a blistering, powerful, beautiful, necessary read.

only 10 pages in. She just used "myriad" and "cerulean" in the same paragraph. Please, step away from the thesaurus.

admittedly, the comanche were pretty appalling by anyone's standards. reavers of the old west. but i think you could emphasize the horrors of their actions without getting into questions of cultural superiority. 'warriors of the steppe', a history of the mongols, manages to balance these things quite nicely.

dirty even by indian standards. low civilization. stone age barbarians. behind european culture by 4,000 years. settled agriculture the ultimate in human progress. is this still the current academic mindset? sounds like my old 1950s collection of 'southwest anthropology review'

Fascinating already, but I'm also already bothered by some of the language. 'almost civilized' seems like a pretty crappy way to describe the Iroquois.
