Commencing book II: The Spirit Mage

I have delayed reading this book, but now that I have started I am finding interesting as a work of fiction.

While I was aware of aversion therapy, ECT, and hormone treatments to "cure" homosexuality, I was not aware that in Australia psychosurgery was used. That shocked me, as I thought that was something used in Nazi Germany. It's like homosexuality was used by people in power to experiment on, like something that was not human, a lab rat.

"During the 1980's and 1990's 70-80% of lesbians and gay men reported verbal abuse; 20-30% reported threats of violence; 20% of gay men and 10-12% lesbians reported physical violence...It was noted that a lot of homophobic violence was not reported."
