This book is the actual start of the Rawlins mystery series. Walter Moseley wrote this book first but the publishers rejected it. He say that he is was told the book was too black in that it only had 1 white character. The book is the shortest of his novels that I have read and the best. I felt the world of Rawlins as the imagery is seductive. This book explain the Easy Rawlins I read of in the other novels.

Good read. Mosley not only tell a good story but adds in history and advice without disturbing the story. The moves effortlessly between story lines, and builds the anticipation at pivotal points. The ending is a little "too cheesy" for me- if you shoot at me I'm going to shoot you. However, the book is a good read with no let down, especially if you like detective fiction. 🤙🏾
