Well, as usual, a male author has managed to write two types of female characters: love interests and his mother. I thought we might have a maid there for a minute, but then she became a mother with love interests. Bonus (sarcasm) we got to see the love interest naked, so that proves this author is definitely good at writing female characters (aka: characters).

The author seems to really want to include beautiful descriptions and I WANT to like them, but I just have to scratch my head at lines like “it [the fog] looked as though soup skim had formed over the entire island during the night” (pg.92). I know what soup skim is—fog is supposed to have this effect? Sometimes Kidd just misses the mark.

Hm…I’m getting very mid-life crisis vibes from the book so far. The book started off by acknowledging there would be an affair with a monk, so this was never going to be a secret. But now we’ve met the monk—barely a chance meeting at night—and she’s already having sexy dreams about him. The term that comes to mind is “plot device.”
