The Son was not subject to death because of his own sin (impeccability) or because of his humanity (mortality is not part of the essential nature of man). Therefore, he was free to voluntarily die in man's place.

He chose itinerant over a settled ministry.

"Man, whose nature is rational, was made holy for this end, that he might be happy in enjoying God" (p. 50). Why would God create rational creatures capable of enjoying him and abandon the project? No, it is "necessary for him to perfect in human nature what he has begun" (p. 51).

(a) Man can’t be happy unless his sins are forgiven. (b) His sins cannot be forgiven unless they are paid for. (c) Man cannot pay for his own sins.

The great burden of sin: "So heinous is our sin whenever we knowingly oppose the will of God even in the slightest thing; since we are always in his sight, and he always enjoins it upon us not to sin" (p. 41).

"Through you, Lord, the baits and enticements of evil have no power to hold us" (Augustine).

This chair has more saving grace!
