I love this book, but I pretty much love anything by KBB.

BTW couldn't have been more wrong. The KKK would have brutal 2nd and 3rd waves in 1915 and 50

The time is not far distant when the whole South will appreciate this service in a way that it has not yet been able to do" (62).

"I have spoken of my admiration for General Armstrong, and yet he was but a type of that Christlike body of men and women who went into the Negro schools at the close of the war by the hundreds to lift up my race. The history of the world fails to show a higher, purer, and more unselfish class of men and women than those who found their way into those Negro schools" (57–58).

Chapter 14: in which the Denhollanders' church elders intimidate them into silence, strip them of small group leadership, demand an apology *from them,* for speaking out about abuse.

Ch. 1 paints a very rosy picture of slavery and "kind masters." Important to note that by BTW's account, these are memories from when he was 6yo and younger (Harlan: "too young to have experienced first hand the harshness of the slavery system"). Harlan also points out that BTW was born on a "small farm, not a plantation as he suggests in Up From Slavery." Not surprising that BTW earned the favor of southern whites.
