Just about the worst book on the subject. Greg Bahnsen's disaster from the 1970s is almost better...almost.

The chapter on Gloria Swanson is simply gold!

This book is just so great...wonderful anecdotes and commentary about how films were made during the pre-Talkie era.

My first time reading this classic. I'm sure I'll return to our again soon.

"The drama of doctrine therefore involves the struggle over how best to perform one's discipleship" (59). YES!!

"Truth-telling is not the same as coming out."

OK...but how is it different? She didn't say at the conclusion of the chapter...just asserted and left it hanging there.

Butterfield makes great points about the necessity of repentance in the Christian life. She deals forthrightly with shame and the importance of meditating on Scripture as a regular practice for the believer. However, her assessment that identifying one's sexual orientation as anything other than heterosexual being a concession to indwelling sin is, in my estimation, off.

Vanhoozer's book is promising to be a helpful guide on seeing theology not as a mining of propositions from Scripture, but a script which the baptized follow.
