Might have been better as a 500-page memoir on COUM/TG given how compressed those sections are, but who else is going to write memories of the Chris and Cosey or CTI albums?

The last 30 or so pages have amused themselves with bickering dialogue and sarcastic narration, which has considerably improved the book after a pretty dreary first two chapters.

I like to support local authors. First time reading Eliot.

Slow going, although I suppose that suits a book about an author as ponderous as Mann.

Kind of pedestrian so far. The real Mann’s novels (though excellent) can often be slow and self-serious: in that respect Tóibín’s novelisation of his life reflects its subject.

Third edition (assumedly the second edition in terms of content, with a new foreword and afterword by someone else). No point pondering the meaning of one wild idea or thought when there’s another one along in the next sentence: you’ll never get the book finished. Better to be swept along in the rushing torrents of Bob’s frantic imagination.

Fairly slow going so far, as the collection, being chronological, is back loaded with the hits (‘The Nose’, ‘The Overcoat’) and the Ukrainian tales are unusual fairy stories.
