At this point Potocki has ceded the lion’s share of many chapters of his book to his (assumedly his) thoughts on religion and its origins, which is well written and interesting and yet part of me wishes he’d go back to the main plot where there’s a mysterious cave haunted by horny ghosts.

The Matryoshka doll story-in-story-in-story format is now so complicated that a character is scripted to complain about it.

Some automata turn up in a paradisal castle a mere two paragraphs before a skeleton army debut.

This book from 1809 has started off as a sort of Wild West ghost town story in which a soldier explores an empty town only to find ghosts, vampires, incestuous sisters and bandits in the opening 30 pages alone.

This is a novel none of my friends have read in which a girl is trapped in a school. Half the students have mutated in bizarre ways and the showers drip blood. I’m guessing this is a mystery which will turn out to be a metaphor, but the bizarre scenario means I’ve blazed through 40 pages straight away.

I don’t really understand what the hell is going on but I assume that, with the Panther Moderns, Gibson has invented furries.

Just past a bit where Dickens is parodied with such broad brushstrokes that one imagines a crying Statue of Liberty in the picture. (As if the caricature was not obvious enough, Trollope references Bucket and Mrs Gamp by name to make sure we get the joke.)

A lot of intrigue (ie scheming) at this point. Not sure I know what’s going on.
