What can we ever gain in forever looking back and blaming ourselves if our lives have not turned out quite as we might have wished?

Loyalty has to be earned. There’s too much made of loyalty. All too often men talk of loyalty and follow blindly. I for one have no wish to lead my life like that.

You wake in the morning, you’re feeling fine, but all at once you think, “Something’s not right. Something’s off somewhere; what is it?” And then you remember that it’s your child—whichever one is unhappy.

Cozy comfortable reading. I want to just hug this book and stay this way all day long! Anne Tyler, I love you.

The disappointments seemed to escape the family’s notice, though. That was another of their quirks: they had a talent for pretending that everything was fine. Or maybe it wasn’t a quirk at all. Maybe it was just further proof that the Whitshanks were not remarkable in any way whatsoever.

It's so easy to judge other family's drama, but then you stop and think you don't have the right to do so, what would those fictional characters think about yours?

Not many books make me go back after every chapter and read again. This is maybe the most valuable and informative book about life I have ever read. I guess after finishing the book I can say I read it twice.

Finished book 2. What I love about the books is that each book has the first chapter of the following book, and I always finish the book halfway to home or work, so at least I have something to read before I reach my destination.
P.S. I LOVE the illustrations. And the funny part of all my reading the series is the faces of the people in public transport when they see a grown up reading illustrated children's book.

There was no power of recuperation left, no reserve strength to call upon. It had been all used, the last least bit of it. Every muscle, every fibre, every cell, was tired, dead tired.

There was nothing the matter with them except that they were dead tired. It was not the dead-tiredness that comes through brief and excessive effort, from which recovery is a matter of hours; but it was the dead-tiredness that comes through the slow and prolonged strength drainage of months of toil.

This ecstasy, this forgetfulness of living, comes to the artist, caught up and out of himself in a sheet of flame; it comes to the soldier, war-mad in a stricken field and refusing quarter; and it came to Buck, leading the pack, sounding the old wolf-cry, straining after the food that was alive and that fled swiftly before him through the moonlight.

There is an ecstasy that marks the summit of life, and beyond which life cannot rise. And such is the paradox of living, this ecstasy comes when one is most alive, and it comes as a complete forgetfulness that one is alive.

That's what I hate about love. You get so dependent on a person that you can't lead an intelligent life without them. It's sick.
