The leaps this has to jump through to be remotely plausible... still, I’m a sucker for naval tropes in space and privateer is an underexplored set.

ok so like, after 5 seasons of deliciously awful but incredibly enjoyable theater-kid free play that was the tv show, it's weird to come back to the source. most of these characters got a definitive upgrade in the show - penny especially. still, it's interesting to see how much of it really was faithful to the book, even if it didn't feel like it at the time.
