I've read 600 pages of the Goldfinch, enough to be quite sure my opinion won't change. There are intense moments in this novel, and it could have been great -- Theo's struggle with his mom's death is brilliantly explored -- but too often the story spirals downward into tedium, and I drown in the repetitive detail. If I had to read one more page of Theo and Boris growing up, I would have gagged.
