Feels like there are a few too many characters and pieces of "lore" jammed in here, on top of using real countries - which makes for a lot of unforced questions about history. Why are European countries the only ones named?

I've been puzzling over why this book isn't hitting that well, and I think it's bc there are too many ideas. It's a fantasy land but also there are real countries, and it's not clear which history the reader should care about. Italy, "Africa" (no named country), Mediterranean (no named country)... wait are the only countries being named European? Yikes
