So far I am still trying to get a grasp of what’s about to happen. I have a feeling that it’s going to be nothing and that should be exciting. The writing is so honest. Like blunt, honesty-to-your-face.

9. In a relationship, don’t take responsibility for others problems and don’t make others do the same for you. Learn to handle your own shit, by taking support from others
10. Death is the only certainty. It’s inevitable.
Our values change when we realise that we all will one day die

Chapter 4 -
If you suffer what you value most, it doesn’t feel so bad

If you choose your suffering, it doesn’t feel so bad

How you measure your success is important. You define the metrics that make you successful

Examples of Pete Best, Dave Mustaine and Lt. Hiroo Onoda of how they felt different things as they changed the metrics/value to measure their happiness and success

Chapter 2-
Happiness comes from solving problems and not by avoiding them.
Embrace and accept the pain/suffering, instead of running away.
Emotions are just feedback mechanisms to tell us whether something is wrong or right for us.
Choose your struggle not based on just the outcome, but what pain are you willing to go through to achieve the outcome.

So far I have only understood that I should not give a fuck about too many things. Just pick out the important things in my life and distribute fucks accordingly.

The third story ‘An Independent Organ’ talks about how the mightiest of us have been struck by love and how we have completely given ourselves to it and probably come out stronger/weaker. Apparently, it’s a true story, and that’s quite disturbing because of how it ended. Nevertheless, Murakami writing in first person is a different feeling.

The second story ‘yesterday’ is probably Murakami’s second story referencing to a Beatles’ song. The story was pretty normal, an account of a few past dated events in the author’s life with a particular person. Nothing spectacular here. Pretty mundane and everyday like.

Done with the first short story. A typical Murakami, conversations revealing the depth of character and the thought put into the same.
