Oh, I am not loving this. I'll keep reading, since it was recommended by a friend, but it's shaping up to be a paranormal romance between a mortal teen and the literal grim reaper who's been drawn to her since she was a baby, and I am not about that in the slightest.

Not to be that guy, but your story is set in 2022. If you have a character mention having watched all of Doctor Who, you can't then later have them refer to the Doctor as "he." Jodie Whittaker started playing the role in 2017 and was still the current star at that point. She/they only!

Really not loving this so far! But I do think I would have liked it better back in high school, when I was all-in on Heinlein for a while.

Touchstone is the one element that doesn't quite work for me, I think. Still probably gonna give this five stars, but his introduction could/should've been better motivated, rather than just being randomly stumbled upon and turning out to be important.

It would be cool if we could somehow signal the evilness of this villain without all the ableism.

Why is the heroine the only one of her friends who travels with backup identity documents, has a personal safehouse set up, etc? Seems like any assassin with 40 years experience would take such precautions, but her friends would be totally lost without her despite having the same job history.

Not to be a broken record. But. What is the bad guy trying to accomplish here?

Still riding the boundary between 3 and 4 stars for me. I have a lot of nostalgia from reading this book back in high school, but I'm not entirely certain that it's merited.

I do think I'd be enjoying this story more if I had any clear sense of what the bad guys are trying to accomplish. Okay, you have magic powers and put almost everyone in the world to sleep on Halloween... why? I'm 40% through the book; that shouldn't still be such a mystery.

This insistence from multiple sources that 13 is too old to still go trick-or-treating is weird, too. Is it a regional thing? I went all through high school, and never heard anyone say that I shouldn't. Objecting to 13 y/o trick-or-treaters is just wild to me.

Does Joseph Fink have children? This 3y/o is written much more like a 1y/o, and it's weird that no editor addressed that.

Thought this was going to be 3 stars for most of it, but at this point I'll be shocked if I don't land on a 2 by the end.

Okay, this stuff with the vampire is good. I'd been leaning towards a 3-star rating for most of this book, but I could maybe see it ending at a 4 if the current trajectory continues.
