I’ve been waiting all year to read this for Christmas break!

Jet lag version: young Tadeusz returns home where dinner parties afford diatribes on the clash between old values and new; trees, flowers; hunting; mushroom picking; the Count and Tadeusz pursue the mysterious Telimena, but, in the end, Tadeusz discovers that she's ugly; suddenly, war!; Napoleon is advancing on the Russians with Poles in tow; Germans are Krauts; Prussians and Russians just as bad. Poland will rise.

It’s interestinf to poll random Poles here in Poland about this book. The reaction is not unlike that of Americans’ toward Moby-Dick.

Seems right to be reading this during my trip to Wrocław this week.
