The crime against humanity is not the development of weapons that can wipe out the entire world.
The real crime is Labatut's 2-page run-on sentences (e.g. p. 22 or p. 24+). If style reflects content, perhaps he's trying to capture a maniacally rambling thought pattern.
I suspect this would be much better as an audiobook. Yet here it is, in the printed medium.
