So far, so average. Some interesting setups for later on, and a nice depiction of hope growing up around excellence gives young people a headstart in some areas.
Pretty clumsily signposted "antagonist is really love interest in disguise" being set up between Violet and Xaden. Plus the character of Jack is just so unrealistically evil, he makes the instructors seem useless when he breaks their rules so flagrantly.
