I can't be the only one who wanted to see Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser go up against Cthulhu or Dagon or some other Lovecraftian shellfish-god-monster in "The Sunken Land," right?

That time of the year again: read-bernation. This is where I have a desperate need to read as many books as possible (and impossible) at the same time. But no...I must be strong and read what I can manage. The other path...that way lies madness...(and a lot of trips to the bookstore)

It's interesting when such a serious book as this offers a funny scene that, surprisingly, made me chuckle. I have read two sequences that caused me to laugh lightly, and I was surprised because, everything else in the novel, is so dark (in tone as well as in described color) and serious. However, the Twins offer something that can almost be called comic relief, and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised.

Having read Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, I can see the clear inspirations that Tad Williams drew from Peake's work. The lengthy and mesmerizing descriptions of passages, halls, rooms and travels. Simon's wanderings through the insides of Asu'a are remarkably akin to Steerpike's climbs and travels. I'm very glad to have finally chanced upon the Gormenghast novels.

"The rich soil crumbles through the yeoman's fingers. As the pearl diver murmurs, 'I am home' as he moves dimly in the strange water-lights, and as the painter mutters, 'I am me' on his lone raft of floorboards, so the slow landsman on his acre'd marl - says with dark Fuchsia on her twisting staircase, 'I am home.'"

"Dath just stared at Edana which for some reason annoyed Cywen."
Alright, then.

Still making slow progress. Ironically, I don't read as much over the weekends as during the week.

Liking it so far, though! Veradis is fun, I like him. I imagine his country to be either Troyan-style or Roman.

I like it so far. I only have the problem that the language feels a little wooden and repetitive at times. The descriptions are breezed over, and the author doesn't give enough time to build tension or suspense, almost as if he were hurrying through the scenes.

But I love the concept of NOT-ELVES being the other non-human race. I also love that it was a giant scholar who describes the lore and history of the world.

Once you get past the slow beginning, it's pretty amazing. I'm not done yet, but already I want to read the 3rd one.

So far so good! I mean, the buildup in the prologue was comparable to the buildup in the first half of The Return of the King! And the whole knighthood-gunslinger parallel....I love it! And them Wolves, man! I don't know what or who they are yet, but they are already terrifying.
