This is a brilliant book that really plays with the Whorfian hypothesis that language shapes the way we think - in the case a docile (one might say 'Hobbit-like') people are turned into a fighting army by changing elements of their language - Vance is a great story-teller.

Really enjoying this! John D. Rateliff's chapter 'Anchoring the Myth: The Impact of The Hobbit on Tolkien's Legendarium' is revelatory and a must read for all Tolkien lovers and academics.

I am loving this book. Another find from Douglas A Anderson through the current excellent Mythgard institute Roots of the Mountain course! What a hilarious character this pawnbroker is!
