Two or three chapters suffer in Book IV, too much burden on Smeagol and Sam to hold reader's interest. Peter Jackson thus added twists in Gondor. Soromon's characterization... awesome

The black gate is closed: Shoddy writing. Poorly scripted. Seems like he is too eager to reach to the next chapter. It was always going to be difficult for Tolkien to manage with just three characters.
