I am impressed by the breadth of this first chapter. Philosophy of science, epistemology, the mind-body problem, sensation vs. perception (sounds like a Buddhist here!). James has also begun to unabashedly draw out the mind/brain as a system constantly pursuing some sort of homeostasis – I've never seen this drawn out so explicitly before.
