I'm a little disappointed about how this book is going so far?? I thought there would be a deeper commentary about war but like... This is just Ernest Hemingway talking to his nurse girlfriend. Total snoozefest

This book is such a breath of fresh air after reading that mess called House of Leaves. Hemingway is so stoic and succinct that even his narration of a bomb exploding comes off as unemotional. I don't know if I necessarily like that stylistically, but it's a hell of a lot better than whatever Danielewski was doing

Straight people are wild... They can just meet each other for the first time in a hospital courtyard and instantly declare that they're in a relationship and start making out. Right in front of my salad

I'm like so close to abandoning this book. I'm going to keep reading because there are some interesting things happening in one of the narratives, but if I wanted to visualize heterosexual escapades, I would just search for it on the internet

The parts of this book that describe the house and the characters that live in it are interesting, I guess. I would honestly be happy with a book just about that instead of having the narrative being interrupted by a straight dude who can't shut up about having a crush on a stripper

It's taking me a little while to get used to the prose in this book, but it's a good speedreading exercise. I can't decide if the author is actually pretentious or just making fun of pretentious academics. I'm leaning a little bit more towards the former. I'm gonna give it another 150 pages before I decide whether to abandon or not

I'm a bit nervous about this book. It was recommended to me by a BookTuber that generally shares my taste in literature, and I'm a fan of horror, but I'm not usually a fan of post-modernism. We'll see how this goes

This book is a masterpiece. I can't help imagining Esther taking the place of myself when I was at Illinois Wesleyan. I remember having so many of the exact same thoughts as her, although perhaps she narrates them in a different way. I remember thinking about how drab the world was even when I was supposed to be happy even in my "golden college years." I certainly identify with her in a very striking way.

The prose in this novel is really exquisite--I wish there were more contemporary authors that wrote in the same way.

This book is fascinating but I'm considering shelving it for a while because it's beginning to feel like a slog. I have a bunch of new recommendations that I want to read through and this book is one of the more academic books about Buddhism that I've read recently, and it can be very dry at times (particularly during the parts that don't directly deal with the Dharmadhatustava)

Holy shit, this book is not for beginners. The excerpt about Uttaratantra 1.28 by Mikyo Dorje is incredibly complex. Buddhahood does not exist as something separate from sentient beings, but it is not connected to them. In this way, you can only uncover Buddhahood by the process of change and practice initiated by hearing the words of a Buddha. Therefore, the tathagata is suchness absent of adventitious mental stains
