Finally giving Austen a serious look...

"The Broken Heart" - I don't disagree, but a "broken heart" has become a cliche. The human heart is more than romantic and not solely the property of women. Many experiences can signify a broken heart, as each person's heart holds different constitutions. Yet there is a universal commonality binding us together and it consists of something deeper than romantic love. When that breaks, the heart is truly broken.

"Rural Life in England" - In addition to painting a tranquil yet thrilling image of the English countryside, Irving analyzes the effects of such an environment on the psyche of man and the fulfillment he experiences living a rural life. Gentleman and peasant alike find a nurturing home in nature.

I think I need to read something a little less heavy next...but just a little :)

Onto Book Two...ugh, here it is. Unless I'm mistaken, Wright suffers from typical otherness. His skill would render him as an uncategorized great among literati yet history considers him as a champion of black literaure. That's amazing, but he's more than that label.

And two and a half hours later, I'm on page 34. Oh boy...

I can't get Juneteenth out of my head, mostly because I don't think my review measures up to it. But I just can't get it get it to the level of writing I think the book deserves. Everyone should read this book. It satisfies the literary mind on so many levels.

Chapter 2 just might make it on my list of best literary chapters ever. Form, concept, intellect...this guy's good.

"English Writers on America" - In this piece, I think Irving unintentionally imparts sound advice about prejudice - how to cope and how to avoid it.

Is it blasphemous to say I like this more than The Godfather?

Rip Van Winkle" - Finally, now I've read this American tale with the ancient mythical hue. Yet it confuses me a bit. It rings like a fable, but without the lesson learned. Perhaps the mysticism surrounding the Kaatskill Mountains indicates how America, or its essence, exaggerates our characteristics. Not sure...like I said, confusing.

"The Wife" - Though I would like to hear a feminist's interpretation, I find this piece uplifting. Irving tells of a man whose wife shares in the comforts of prosperity and leaps to support her husband when stricken by poverty, with no distracting elegances to impede their simple love. Irving embellishes the foolishness of man's piggish assumption that women needs lavishness in order to enjoy true happiness.

"Roscoe" - Irving employs a lofty prose style which I may forgive after familiarity. He describes the shock of a celebrity as a feeble man. As a person, the celebrity falls victim to ill-fortune, something common to most people who had found comfort in the idea of a celebrity's transcendence from such a life. No such luck for Roscoe...or Irving?

"The Voyage" - Wow...a poetic rendition of the vast excitement represented by sea voyages and the vulnerability of man, both for unending joy and perilous danger, when embarking at sea for the boundless potential of the unknown. This opening piece, depicting feelings about his voyage from America to Europe, symbolize the thrilling journey from past to future through the turbulence of life.

I need my literary fix...Stephen Hawking just doesn't satisfy and I thought this would be a good one to read alongside him.
